This program is a must for amateur and professional photographers, graphic designers and web designers. In Photoshop CS3 there are monstrous amounts of tools and ways to manipulate images! This software review will only scratch the surface. I encourage those who have not tried Photoshop CS3 to take it for a test drive. Adobe has a generous ‘try before you buy’ program. For the purpose of this review, I will be focusing on some new image editing features in Photoshop CS3, but I could not resist mentioning the Photoshop CS3 Extended version to satisfy the curious. There appears to be confusion among folks, who are not familiar with the Photoshop software progression, concerning the Photoshop CS3 Extended and Photoshop CS3 versions. To clarify the difference, Photoshop CS3 Extended is recommended for those designers and developers in fields that require 3D modeling and more powerful video integration (like Flash). Professionals such as Web designers or developers using 3D and motion graphics, film & video professionals, medical professionals, designers, architects, engineers and manufacturing professionals will get more of what they want from the software using the extended version. Now, I’ll get down to the Photoshop CS3 characteristics in the remainder of this review. One of the major changes and improvements in Photoshop CS3 from the previous version is mainly tighter integration with other Adobe software such as Bridge and Lightroom. Bridge was introduced in the CS2 version and there have been performance improvements between Photoshop and Bridge. For those not familiar with the CS2 version, Bridge is essentially the new “file browser” used in Photoshop CS. My experience with CS2 is limited, since I had gone from CS to CS3. I can say that I love Bridge and I do not miss the old PS file browser. Lightroom compliments photoshop by allowing photographers to import, manage digital workflow, make adjustments (non-destructive), comparing, etc. So, if you are a photographer, this program is very useful along side of Photoshop CS3. A host of new features with the the palettes are also included in this new version of Photoshop. Some major improvements and new tools in the image enhancing and editing features are nondestructive editing in camera raw, the black and white command, clone source palette, more features in curves, smart filters, and zoomify. The following paragraphs will try to describe these improvement and features. Of course, there are a lot more new toys included in the new Photoshop, but my intent is to tease the reader with descriptions of some popular features-not write a book on them! The deeper I delve into this software, the more I find. In camera raw mode, Photoshop allows you to control all parts of an image or choose an "automatic" selection built in. A new feature within camera raw is a "restore tool". You can clean up dust marks without going into Photoshop (restoration/healing brush tool). None of the changes are saved to the original file - so you can experiment without worry! Another new editing feature is the black and white command where one can transform a color photo into a black and white photograph in a snap. The new “clone source palette” allows you to restore and clean up images more easily (uses multiple sources from the healing brush and clone stamp tools) You can also copy a clone source to another image. It also gives you an "overlay" image to see what has been altered! One of my favorite improvements to the “curves” panel is that there is a histogram within the dialog box and new presets available in the contextual menu. I use “curves” to control the light and dark areas of a photo and Photoshop CS3 makes using this powerful tool easier. Also new in this version, is the ability to use Smart Filters that allow you to "readjust" the image by double clicking on smart filter. They are nondestructive and can be adjusted within the Smart Object layer. The last feature I want to mention that is different from the traditional image editing tools within Photoshop CS3, is the Zoomify command. To see this new feature, open up any high resolution photo and apply the command by going under File > Export > Zoomify. After making selections in the dialog box, Zoomify allows you to pan around a high resolution image quickly in a web browser. Photoshop uses the power of Flash to create a web page and all the tiles (pieces of image) automatically for you in a separate folder on your hard drive. Cool! This is my meager attempt as a rookie user of Photoshop CS3. It’s mind boggling on how much power is within this software! I have yet to discover a lot more of the power and usefulness of this popular software and put it to good use. In the meantime, if you haven’t used Photoshop yet, I invite you to dive in an try it. You may just want to consider it as a staple in your workflow as a web designer, photographer, or graphic artist. |

I've spent a fair amount of time during the last month working with Photoshop CS3 to try to improve some old photographs. While a professional could with out a doubt get better results, I have been able to greatly improve most with no more than a few clicks per picture. If you work with digital photographs of any kind, I'd suggest getting this product. BTW, great review Mariette! |

I was using previous versions of Photoshop for so many years and didn't land to CS3. Can anyone tell me the extra specifications that CS3 has?
I am very much familiar with its previous versions and didn't try other tools.

I'm no expert on Photoshop, so I can't speak to what features that CS3 would have that previous versions didn't. However, you can hit Adobe's website and see what's new in the CS5 vesion (and if you dig a bit you can find a list of all the features, there are a LOT) Try http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/whatsnew/ as a starting point. |
