I recently got an email news letter about optimizing your website for Yahoo!

While the email went into depth about how to optimize your site for Yahoo! I think it is missing one thing. Yahoo! search engine, while good, is second to Google. and it's a distant second to Google!

Here is part of the email and what it said about Yahoo! and Google:

With a reported 22.1% of search traffíc Yahoo is second only to Google's 64.4%

Algorithmically Yahoo is Google's much younger sibling. I say this
because many of the requirements for a successful ranking mirror Google's
requirement about 4 years ago ...

The first sentence says it all! I'm not saying that 22.1% of search engine traffic is bad, but if you compare it to 64.4% of the search engine traffic, that's about 1/3 of the big guy. Will it hurt to optimize your site for Yahoo!? No, as long as you don't do something that will help in Yahoo! and hurt you in Google, which is possible.

This is a balancing game that needs to be played very carefully. I think as long as you do ok in Google, you will probably still do pretty well in Yahoo! but that's just my opinion from experience. I have always done pretty good in Google, and there were times that I didn't do so well in Yahoo! but it did not hurt my business.

When someone calls me, one of the first questions I ask them is "how did you find my business?" If they say that they "found me on the internet," I ask "was it a search engine?" If they say yes, I ask "which search engine?" Almost always, 99% of the time, they say "Google" the other 1% of the time they answer "MSN" Yahoo! has never been an answer yet. I will also say that my business is BOOMING to the point that I don't know if I should take on another website for a while. Has Yahoo! helped me with this? Answer: NO.

It's not that Yahoo! is a bad search engine, it's a good search engine, but for now, until they get more of the searches, I think I'll stick to making sure that Google is my websites first priority, not Yahoo!

The quote came from Ross Dunn who is the founder and CEO of StepForth Web Marketing Inc.. Based in Victoria, BC, Canada.
